These are some of the better music video things I've shot over the years.
Help - Sound And Vision (Official Video)
We made this music video in my backyard in 2021. Go check out Help!
Help - Class War Now (Live 1/19/2020)
My friend Sam and I recorded this, the tire even took out Sam at one point. Joey Cox mixing the audio a month or so later.
Sean Croghan / Sara Lund / Sherry Fraser 12/31/2017
This was one of the songs perfomed at the annual Battle of the Decades put on by Janet Weiss. I've ran the video shoots the last three years, the most recent being 2018/19 New Years Eve. That was a 520 gigabyte show!, recorded on six cameras and a full multitrack. Hopefully I can get that online before 2066.
Anyway, this has been one of my favorite perfmances, and Sean is such a great performer to shoot video of.
Two Cow Garage 6/19/2015
Two Cow Garage are a band I stumbled onto a few years ago and are one of my favorite bands in the history of like forever. They are a lot of fun to shoot video of because they do that "wow, they actually moving around the stage" thing.
They were playing at Dante's one Friday night so I got a few folks together and ended up having five cameras going. I had to make everything black and white because the stage lighting ended up changing to solid blue which looked fine from the crowd, but not so hot on video. Editing all five cameras together took a long while to edit but I am pretty happy with how it turned out.
For the audio, I ran a multitrack on a couple Tascam 680s along with a Roland R-26 up in the Go-go platform, plus a Zoom recording a couple of the cymbal tracks that the Tascams didn't have room for. My friend Tim Green from Louder Studios in Grass Valley, CA mixed the whole lot together.
Andrew Loomis (drummer) has since passed away since I recorded this. I as at the reunion show a year prior in 2014 but I didn't really record that show since I was more focused just on attending the show. Anyways, for this show I was there early and up front. This was all recorded on my Canon 7D with two different lenses. The audio is actually the old mic from my Sony D3 that I used to tape shows with back in the 1990s. I plugged the mic into my camera and the sound came out better than expected. I was picking up a lot of the audio from Toody's monitor which is the main reason the sound came out alright.
Notice at the start of the show they put a latex glove over the microphone on Andrew's floor tom. If you jump to the 38:00m mark in the video you'll see why it was needed.
Red Fang "Blood Like Cream" behind the scenes
Red Fang shot their 2013 video "Blood Like Cream" in Southeast Portland in November 2013, with Whitey McConnaughy directing. I was there for a couple days of the shoot. To bookend the video I went to their rehearsal space and shot a bunch of rehearsal footage. It was basically me in the middle of the tiny room with them around me. I had stacked two cameras ontop of each other and put them at 90 degrees so I was able to get a bit more footage without having to constantly spin around making myself dizzy.
This is all drawn from about 12 hours of footage that took me three solid weeks to edit down. The audio track is from a live show at Le Krakatoa Mérignac from the folks at 3dlivemusic.tv.
Star Anna, Justin Davis, Mike McCready (Pearl Jam)
I took the bus up to Seattle to record my friends Justin Davis and Star Anna doing an in-store at Sonic Boom records for Record Store Day in 2012. I was out front saving my spot to shoot video from when I heard them start rehearsing in the back. A nice dude named Denny watched some of my crap while I grabbed my camera and ran to the back of the store.
Star was doing a run through of Robyn's "Call Your Girlfriend". Mike was going through the rare 45s and I got to nerd about the finer Discogs-level details of the Pearl Jam fan club singles with him. The three of them later rehearsed a version of "Devil Don't Remember My Name" which you see here.
Matador 21
Yet again, this is one of those times where I wasn't planning on shooting video, then slowly couldn't resist and started recording a bunch of stuff. There is a bunch of stuff crammed into these 15 minutes, too much to list here...but I will point out that some good friends decided to get married that weekend too. Matador ended up putting this video on their blog a few days later. I also made a page on the Human Clock website for the show that has a lot more video and photos.
Mike Krol 12/4/2015 - Portland, OR - Bunk Bar
I found out about Mike through The Best Show hosted by Tom Scharpling. I checked him out was instantly pulled in. He later posed for a time on the Human Clock website that I have.
Titus Andronicus 10/2/2015 Portland, OR - Music Millenium
Patrick played a solo set at Music Millennium early one Friday evening. The first song featured six strings and the rest featured only five but he handled it well. This is also the last time I ever tried shooting something handheld without any sort of stabilization. I had my monopod, why didn't I bring it?
Star Anna Rake
This is my friend Star playing the Townes Van Zandt tribute show at the Tractor Tavern. Audio is off the board mixed in with room mics.
Star Anna "Smoke Signals" studio recording
I was in the studio for a good chunk of the recording of this album. I dared Star to put her dog Forest on her shoulders...and she did!
Fucked Up In-Store at Doc Martens
Whoo Boy. This was a bit chaotic to record and a lot of fun. The crowd was really into the show, just jump to the 21:00m mark to see.
Damian's mic cord nearly took my GoPro camera off the PA. I ended up moving it and he later grabbed it and played second cameraman for a bit around the 35:00m mark. The first 10 minutes are a little harder to see because the sun hadn't gone behind Powell's bookstore yet, so I was shooting straight into the sun. My friend Scott Drew took the thumbnail photo of Damian, well, in full Damian mode.
Star Anna Rehearsal - American Girl (Tom Petty)
Rehearsing a cover for their 2012 4th of July show. Justin started playing Jimi Hendrix's version of the "Star Spangled Banner" so everyone else felt that they should "nicely destroy" their instruments.
Rockin' free world (rehearsal)
This is Los Cabellos Locos, a Neil Young Tribute band. It has Robert Mitchell, Travis Yost, Justin Davis, Keith Ash, and Gary Westlake. They were rehearsing for a show at the Tractor Tavern the next night. Oddly enough, the first time I ever saw the singer Gary was when he was playing guitar for Jim Carroll many moons ago in the late 1990s.
Cortez killer
This is from the Neil Young tribute show the next night. I included this because Justin went off on the guitar solo and I happened to be right in front of him.
Superconductor: Bush Pilot (unofficial but the drummer said it is sorta offical)
This was another bit that Cora and I made for Thanksgiving. Cora knew Keith the drummer from a long way back and we stayed with him in 2013 when I finished up my PCT hike that year. I'm pretty sure that is AC Newman from The New Pornographers on vocals.(?)
Tibetian Freedom Concert June 15/16, 1996
I snuck my parent's GAF Super 8 camera into the first Tibetian Freedom concert in 1996. Three days later I was on the Pacific Crest Trail for the next few months finishing up walking from Mexico to Cascade Locks, Oregon.
Bugskull - Old Towne / Fearless (Pink Floyd) / The Bloat
Recorded in 2009 at what is now Revolution Hall in Portland. You can see the drummer James Yu in the movie Wendy & Lucy as the cab driver, plus on some days he is holding up #27 on my humancalendar.com website.
Ted Leo: Cast a shadow
Recorded around 2:30am at the afformentioned Matador 21 concert.
Justin Davis - Black flag
Justin Davis doing an acoustic cover of Black Flag's "My War" in our living room. The audience was me and our dog Ms. Freddie.
That's How Strong My Love Is
Not long after I got my 7D camera. Ellensburg, WA 2010. Star brought the house down on this one.
Star Anna + Justin Davis. November 2011.
I was on tour with Star Anna & the Laughing dogs in late 2011 on the East Coast of the USA. They were due to play at Maxwell's in Hoboken, NJ on this night, but we ended up stuck in this horrible storm. I recorded Star and Justin playing a solo set in the living room of the house we were all staying at as a quasi-make-up-gig.
Kasey Anderson - Heavy Heart
This video recorded in March 2012 in Duff McKagan's rehearsal room in Seattle. It is a little interesting looking back on it now. Three years after this video was shot, the guy singing was now in prison, while the guy playing keys was touring the world as part of Katy Perry's band. Oh how times change.
Star / Kasey - Power of my Love
Star Anna and Kasey Anderson at Al's Den, 9/18/2012. The audio power crapped out so Star sang this acapella. I unplugged my audio recorder from the mixing board and managed to get it setup right below her before the stong started.
